Listeners to last week's Friday News Roundup on NPR's Diane Rehm show tasted some local flavor about 33 minutes in, when Susan Page came back from a break and said the following:
We were talking about the Beer Summit before the break. Here's an email from Tom Schafly, who is president, he says, of the Saint Louis Brewery. And he says: 'As the president of what is now the largest American-owned brewery in St. Louis, I was extremely disappointed that the only products served at the so-called Beer Summit were brewed by foreign companies. Billions of tax dollars were spent to bail out American automobile companies. What about American breweries, which now account for only 5 percent of the U.S. market? We're not asking for federal aid,' he said, 'but if our taxes are going to pay for a photo opportunity at the White House, surely at least one beer from an American-owned brewery would be worth showcasing.'
